Forum login settings not secure ?

Post by D.T. Nethery »

Recently when I have logged-in to the TVPaint Community Forums I see this warning message :

"This connection is not secure . Logins entered here could be compromised. "

I have not received this warning pop-up before. Should I be concerned ?

When I click on "Learn More" , it takes me to Mozilla's page which explains what this warning means:

https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/in ... =inproduct

Apparently the pop-up warning about the insecure login is a new feature in version 52 of the Firefox browser ,
which I just updated to, so that is why I am now seeing the warning.

According to Mozilla , the fix is to type in https:// in front of the url forum.tvpaint.com to
check for whether the page has a secure log-in (it does) and then bookmark that as one's login page.
"If a login page for your favorite site is insecure, you can try and see if a secure version of the page exists by typing https:// before the url in the location bar. You can also try to contact the web administrator for the site and ask them to secure their connection."
So now I have bookmarked https://forum.tvpaint.com as my log-in page for the TVPaint Forum.

But their other suggestion is : "You can also try to contact the web administrator for the site and ask them to secure their connection.", so I am posting this here to inquire whether there is some security issue which should be addressed on this forum ? Is there a security setting that could be tweaked on the forum or is this just something the Firefox browser is objecting to because the default forum url (forum.tvpaint.com) is not preceded by the secure https:// protocol ?

Here is a screen shot of the warning pop-up I was seeing when attempting to
login to the default web address forum.tvpaint.com

Here is what shows in the address bar for forum.tvpaint.com -

But if I add https:// in front of forum.tvpaint.com here is what shows in the address bar:

Thank you!

Just about every forum around is not secure and this annoying message just clutters up the fields when logging in.

I doubt that it will prove to be a practical feature leading the way to secure systems in the future.

For better or worse Firefox is the only browser out of the main three that does not become useless and saturated with ad viruses.

I already had the address bookmarked to the secure address here. I will look for something like this elsewhere now that I know this is a solution.

BTW, I believe this forum is already secure but has non-secure access (as an option/alternative?). Otherwise the "https://" prefix would just lead to a bad address message.

It's likely something that the new Firefox version does when an URL does not contain https, as I don't remember previous versions doing the same.

Ok.

For me the problem is solved by bookmarking the forum page with https:// added in front of forum.tvpaint.com . BUT it is one of those slightly alarming type of pop-up warnings ("your connection is not secure !" ) , so I thought I should mention it.
