how do you copy a selected image within the same frame?

Hi, I want to copy a selected image within a layer
whenever i paste a selected image it becomes an extra frame,
for instance i want to copy an image of a ball so that i have 2 balls in the same frame
but when i hit paste the ball is added as a separate frame.
i know you could copy the image in a different layer and then merge but thats too inconvenient.
Any know-hows are appreciated
