help needed with custompanel to workaround missing blendmode

i need to merge two layers in Alpha Diff Blendmode.
since this mode is not available... i thought of a workaround.
Which is to create a custom panel button that picks up one layer as a custombrush
then stamps this custombrush in place on the other layer.
but i run into the limits of trying to do it without scripting, it doesn't seem possible.
this is how far i get....:
i do get to pick up the anim as a custombrush.
but then the drawing mode is not set to alpha diff and also its not putting it down
can anyone see what i'm doing wrong?
