.tif import

.tif import

Postby BenEcosse » Wed Feb 29, 2012 4:58 pm

For some reason I can't import a .tif file into to TVP 10.
I go to open and select the file and nothing happens. This is the same if I import it from the new layers panel.

I have no problem exporting a .tif file so was wondering if this is a known issue?

What is the format of that tiff file ?
TVPaint doesn't support CMYK tiffs.

Does TVPaint support 16bit color (HDRI)?

it opens a RGB 16bit Photoshop file ok. I just convert my image to that. But it's an annoying step to convert it each time so was just wondering what the issue is?

Nope, they are converted to 8 bit (taking only the upper 8 bits).

Send us both files (the one that doesn't load and the PS converted one), and we'll see what's wrong and try to fix it.

I converted the .tif file to 8bit and it opened into TVP10 ok.
It's strange that a PSD 16bit opens ok in TVP but not a 16bit TIFF file?
I have a whole sequence of 16bit frames i am using as a guide so this is why i'm not that keen to have to convert back and forth.

I've uploaded the two files

16bit uncompressed TIFF file (11mb)

16bit PSD file (11mb)

OK, here are the results of the postmortem check :
- tvpaint loads only 16bits PSD files, and converts them to 8 bits.
- thus, tiffs aren't supported in 16 bits.

Argh, this is getting really frustrating as I keep having to convert file formats to accommodate for TVPAs quirks.

So TVP doesn't seem to favour the use of tiffs (16bit it just ignores and doesn't convert to 8bit as it does with PSD). So I now use 8bit psds but then when I'm trying to get in layers with correct alpha it seems that tiff 8bit files is the only way to get them in? These are standard file fomats. I don't have any problems with file formats in other software so this is something that is v frustrating if using multiple software on a project. I do not want to waste time converting file formats back and forth.

You should use PNG for inter-app transfers.

Ok will do that. But isn't PNG a compressed format? I was trying to keep everything uncompressed (hence why the tiff)

It's a lossless compression, just like when you zip a file, then unzip it, it will be the exact same.
(In fact, png uses the exact same compression algorithm than zip).

PNG was originally intended to replace GIF, and in addition provides better color resolution and gets away from patent issues.
