clues as to lost files after crash?

hi all-

sometimes for me tvp crashes, or freezes up and i need to force quit. on some of those occasions i can't seem to find the file i was just working on, even with searches. i know that settings made during the session between opening tvp and the crash are lost, but i'm surprised when i can't find a trace of the file.

this morning for instance, first thing after opening tvp i renamed a file when saving, then i worked on it a bit. then went into configure a keyboard shortcut when tvp froze up. after force-quiting and reopening, no trace of the file with the new name and the new work. last record i could find of working on any tvp file was yesterday eve.

any ideas as to what's happening in the cyber-world that results in this? and how to track down the files?
