In the past, when I have selected items, they have disappeared and popped up onto the tip of my pen to move around and be placed freely.

Recently, something changed--now, when I select an item, it duplicates it….I carry one around on my pen, but the old image still stays there. I like the image to disappear, as it used to!

Can someone help/guide me towards how I turn on/turn off the selection option of picking up or duplicating the selected item? I'd like to switch it back to the old way!

what you're calling "selected" seems to be the cut brush tool,
this one has 2 modes : "Cut" mode = making the item disappear,
and "Copy" mode = keeping the original on the canvas,
if you want the first behavior, toggle the tool's mode to "Cut".

if you want the first behavior, toggle the tool's mode to "Cut".

Or you can select the future cut brush with a right click, and it toggles for Cut mode automatically
