Looking for a "dry" paintbrush

Hello everyone,

I am working on an animation which aims to look as much as possible like "real" watercolour, and I am struggling when it comes to the drier parts of the drawing.
I tried to make my own brush, and to edit some of the paint brushes already available, and it still doesn't look like I would like.
Below is an example of the type of brush stroke I am trying to emulate.
If you have any advice, thanks a lot !! :)

For a brush like this I usually create some 30 or 50 small images with little dots of about 20% opacity to make an Animbrush. I set the rotation to direction and have a spacing between 2 and 10%, animation is random.

have you tried the old 'n good "dry-ink-brush" made by Malcooning :

otherwise, there are 3 others from Ryberg, from which you can start and tweak :

i gave it a try, using your jpg as a source

it works ... sort of
but you will get better results by scanning longer strokes. so you'll better be able to create a satisfying end to the stroke using the connection settings.

now the ending is "hard baked"into the brush so it keeps appearing evcen in mid stroke

Wow thank you so much for your help, everyone, you answered very quickly and you are all very helpful.

Peter, the brush you made is very good, and now I can see what was wrong with the ones I made myself (I cut my brush stroke in only 5 or 6 bits, and the shape was not right) I will follow your advise and try to make one with a longer stroke so that it looks even better. I'll upload it here later.

ZigOtto, thanks for the links. I hadn't found "dry brush" during my browse through the forum (the topic was a bit old maybe) and I really love it, it's responding to pen pressure very well.

has anyone can make some tutorials or explain a little more about the creation of brush? because it's obvious that is a amazing and powerful place to create new looks, and i don't see too much people that know how to use it in depth

Juan, we can show you all the tips regarding custom brushes, but what we will propose you will never perfectly suit your needs. The brush you will love will be the one you will make by yourself. :D

The Malcooning loads in as a custom panel, a .tvpx and I had no problem getting it into my TVP session.

The Ryberg is a zip file which contains a folder with lots of .dip files.
Does anybody know how to import that? Thanks.

Thanks.
To install the Ryberg "RR INK" file:

Custom Panels > New Custom Panel > right-click on New Custom Panel > from menu This Panel > Import > navigate to the RR INK folder > select RR INK.bin
