We always discuss many ideas of what kind of dog we want and then we go to the shelter and find one that is not what we were imagining. But we have been extremely happy with our "rescues" so far.

My experience with giant dogs (I had a Great Dane and a German Shepherd who was nearly that big) is that they often don't require nearly as much space and exercise as our small terrier does. Samadi (our Dane) was a real couch potato. And Troy was far more relaxed and quiet than the smaller dogs we have had.

What a lovely beings they both were. Don't you find that when you love a dog, they stay with you forever?

Yes, I have found that to be true - my other Saint, Gracie, died two years ago, young at five years, from kidney failure ( unusual, to say the least) but she still walks with me, and now with Agnes, too.

Yes, it really depends on the breed (English Bulldogs are "stay-at-home", while French Bulldogs are very dynamic // Bernese mountain dogs are like big fluffy carpets, while Greater swiss mountain dogs need to run a lot), the pedigrees (dogs from a sporty type will need more exercises than dogs from a "beauty type" (sorry, I don't know if I'm using the good words in English )), the dog's temper (there are lazy dogs and untiring dogs)... and it also depends on the owner's temper (do you remember the beginning of the 101 dalmatians ? )

I must agree ! In fact, I really disliked dogs before my husband beg me we take one (I found them annoying, constraining, sometimes dangerous...). But now, I couldn't live without and I'd really like to take another one

I just had to put my dog down the other day... 14yr old female german shepherd. I obtained her from a breeder that raised police dogs. She waited anxiously at my door everyday for last 14yrs, waiting for me to come home from work. I want to get another one for sure, just not ready yet. ~peace

I feel for you. We had to put down our 16 year old Pom a few years back and it was awhile before we could think of another dog. I'm really sorry for your loss. Though it's part of dog ownership, when they die, it's very hard. I'm thinking of you.

I can't imagine how you feel... All cats I had vanished into thin air and I had never have to put them down.

Her name was Kayla.. I had wrapped her in a blanket, mom and kids were saying goodbye to her as I was preparing the car. I gently lifted her, carrying her like a big baby.. she licked my face. ha!

Well, we brought a new dog home today. 4mos old female mix rescued from a vet. we have not named her yet.. she is laying under my chair as I am typing this message. happy holidays.

Great news for that puppy and your family ! A life is gone, but another one has been saved =)

I just now caught up with this thread since before the holidays -I feel your pain and celebrate how you have stayed in the circle of life by bringing home another life to join with Kayla's in this way. Two years ago, my beloved Saint Bernard, Gracie had to leave me,her kidney failure could not be managed any longer, and at five years old, too, too soon to go. And just before Christmas, like your story. Within a month, searching all over the Northeast, I found a two-year old Saint ( and she is!) in need of a home - and she has filled this home with her lovely ways, her big heart and her loyal soul. I know how hard it is to lose a loved one like you have; that love will never leave, and being able to share that love with another is a wonderful thing. My best to you and your whole family - peace and joy.

OMG she is beautiful. I love Basenji's! You are so lucky. I am still looking for a second dog because we couldn't think about much else besides moving these past months. But almost settled in now and anticipating a wonderful canine addition. Our Buckley really needs a dog, and so do we of course.

I always have found Basenjis interesting, but have never known one -, their personalities are supposed to be mellow?

I heard they are good silent guard dog.
They do seem very nice. Physically, they look like a mix between American staff dogs and Akita dogs.

(the contrary of my own dog : a noisy welcoming dog )
