layered textures

Hi folks

After a break, I have another project, and am trying to figure out my set-up. It's a case of animating on top of pre-existing paintings. The client likes my use of layered textures but I don't think it's right to apply these to the original paintings used in the background. In the attached set-up, the background is being affected. I'm trying to think what's the best way to apply the texture (currently top layer, "Sandwick grave") to my animated elements (here, the duplicated layers "plane") without affecting the background layer?

thanks for any help.

Just activate the mask of the animated layer.

Thanks - I had a feeling there was an obvious way. I'll go off and remind myself how that works.

That should look like this, yes? The background is still affected.

From a bit of fiddling about, it looks like that only works for drawing you specifically do after putting on the masks? And not for the imported photographs I want to use.

Any mask can only work if there's transparency in the layer. If you want to affect only parts of that photograph, you need to isolate those parts first (by drawing a mask in a new layer).

I want the top photograph to affect the drawn animation and not affect the painting on the bottom layer at all.

It seems to me this might be something you could do through the FX Stack to apply the texture to your animation drawings. (best to create a dupe layer of the animation and apply texture to that.) Color > Image Source , set the source to your Texture layer, with blend mode Overlay 2 . That could work.
