Open recent

Post by Joost »

Hi there,

I would love it to have an "open recent project" option in TVPaint.

I know we have "recent import" and "recent export". But in my opinion this doesn't make any sense. When using adobe software, in "open recent" I will just find the most recent opened project.

In the way it's done now in tvpaint, I'm always searching where my project is. Sometimes it's not in "recent import" nor in "recent export". Most of the time I just go to my finder/explorer to open a project. This can't be the way it's intended.

Besides that, It's very confusing to see the full path of a project. take a look at the screen capture.
It can be better, don't you agree?

Thanks in advance!

Here is another example:

I recently opened shot 13 version 1 and then saved is as a version 2. (screenshot from my Mac finder)
Then I closed it. Now I want to open it again. Why is it not in "recent import"? (screenshot from "open recent" in TVP)

I really don't understand how this works....
And I also don't understand why it's called "recent import" in stead of "open recent".

What do other people think about this situation?
Why is TVPaint's behaviour so different form all other software that I use?

Thanks in advance!

I agree Joost this is not intuitive.

couple of reasons...
Its a small company,
the software core is 30 years old this year,
and...TVP is french.

Thanks for your reaction Xavier,

Do you mean that in 11.5.2 there will be an "open recent" option? I don't actually know what I have to look for in the screenshot you uploaded... :D

the path is shortened, which is great, but maybe it could really show recent opened files, instead of recent imports.

So you mean to split the recently opened projects from the recently imported media ?

Yea maybe. Since it always can happen that you import more stuff in a project and in the end your actual project won't be in the list anymore.

Yes, this was exactly my request!

"open recent" separate from "recent import" or "recent export"
Like all other software uses this...

I agree with you, but this will need additional work to separate the imported files from the recently opened projects. So I'll put a comment in the task list and we will plan it for a future release.

TVPaint is a big old piece of code. As a newly arrived developer, I compare it to a handmade craft : everything is done by hand, with love and patience ... and it works ! though nothing is actually standard compared to the software industry.
Yet TVPaint has its own personality and we want to keep it like this

+1. Yes please. I like an odd working software much more than a standard non-working one.

Thanks Xavier!

And also thanks for the explanation why TVPaint is different. Sometimes it's hard to understand for me, because I'm not a software developer, and I don't know anything about it. I just think:" if all other software is doing "it" like this, "it" can't be that difficult"... But your answer makes sense. And that's probably also why I really like to work with this piece of old hand crafted software :D

You're welcome !
In the new release (to come very soon) there will be an additional "recent folders" menu that could be of some convenience. You'll tell us

I don't know if I wrote this already, but I'm really happy you joined the TVPaint team Xavier. At least what I can tell from you interaction on the forum you really do an excellent job in listening to the customer requests.

Ooh thank you so much :D

But you should also know that we do our best to satisfy our dear users

It's not always easy to find the correct balance between all the requests : the old ones that are still waiting, and the new proposals. As of today we're much better (re)organized, we have a task board with priority management and we simply need time to process the requests.
