Animated film about illegal dogfighting on Kickstarter

Post by battledawg »

TVPaint is our go-to software for this project. Its versatility and power are truly amazing! See our press release below and please make a pledge today!

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Kickstarter campaign to launch an animated movie about illegal dog fighting.

Dawgtown is the story of a young Pitbull named Max who is taken from his owner and thrown into the brutal world of underground dog fighting. As a competitor in the most well-funded pit-fighting organization in the world, he becomes a sign of hope to the others, and must lead them in a dangerous fight for freedom. It’s Gladiator meets Animal Farm.
“I’ve been researching this subject for years,” says director Justin Murphy, “and talking with various rescue organizations. In order to protect their anonymity, I cannot name them, but they’ve been involved in some high-profile rescues, including busting up Michael Vick’s operation.”

Refreshing about Dawgtown is that it is being produced in the style and technique of traditional hand-drawn animation, which audiences are seeing less and less of these days with the proliferation of CG. “This is indie filmmaking,” Murphy continues, “it’s done all the time with live action, why can’t it be done with animation? We have the talent on board, and the technology makes it affordable now. This is PG-13 material, and it deals with socially relevant issues about animal cruelty and the abuse of power.”

The filmmakers are seeking to raise the $75,000 in pre-production money through Kickstarter. This will enable them to hire the actors needed for the voiceover (one of which includes an internationally known talent) and complete the storyboards for the entire film. The project runs from September 20 - October 20. A portion of this fundraising effort will go towards Pitbull rescue organization efforts.

At first, I was a little disappointed, because I couldn't see any image of a TVPaint use in your Kickstarter. Fortunately, I watched the video ! :D

The theme you have chosen really touches me, and I think I won't be the only one here (many dog lovers here)
American staffordshire are great dogs and that's deplorable to see how bad their reputation is.

We will do our best to support you via our newsletter, Facebook, etc... Good luck for your project

The Kickstarter raised only 20K USD, so here is an Indiegogo campaign, fo 10k USD (and not 75K).

Justin Murphy continues work to secure funding for his animated film "Dawgtown" . The film is now entirely storyboarded and test animation has been created for some key sequences. The film is being animated in TVPaint.

Here is a recent newspaper article about the film:

Man this looks good! Makes me wish I could animate.

Is it really that hard these days? To raise funds for what I would think should be a project that would appeal to so many people!

Well, the "conventional wisdom" in mainstream Hollywood is that for theatrical feature films hand-drawn animation is box-office poison. ("2D" is still considered ok for television shows and special niche projects, 'prestige' television commercials ...) So in the U.S.A. funding for this sort of film from conventional sources will be hard to come by. Independent films have always been an uphill climb , even more so in today's market. I gave money to the Kickstarter and Indie-Go-Go campaign. The thing is , to get full funding for a feature film via Kickstarter or Indie-Go-Go someone would need to have a track record (of previous films) and a very large fan base. The film is now 100% storyboarded and up on animatic reels , and I think he's got some investors interested , so keep watching the Facebook page to see what develops ...
