Pixar to release 2D Short on Ratatouille DVD

Post by D.T. Nethery »

This is interesting :

Your Friend The Rat stills

Pixar 2D Animation short

The first hand-drawn animated 2-D short in Pixar's history.

Jim Capobianco, who directed the short, titled "Your Friend the Rat" told reporters that he got the idea from seeing how much research the filmmakers did into rat behavior and history—much of which never made it into the final film.

"We had to be kind of smart and think of ways to put this together," Capobianco told a group of reporters at Pixar's headquarters in Emeryville, Calif., on Oct. 29. That meant finding people who could do the traditional animation, drawn with pencils on paper, as well as finding space at Pixar's vast campus to produce the 11-minute movie, which is also, oxymoronically, the longest short Pixar has ever produced.

Pencils on paper ? How about that ! What'll they think of next ?

thanks for the links, David.

I've noticed here and there that this 60's UPA style is coming back in "fashion",
and with the tools we have now, this animation style is way much easier (and cheaper?) to produce.
I like the theme too, to go beyond our preconcieved reticences, and basically to preserve any living creature,
it's probably just a matter of conscience, ... or each one's conscience field self-limitation,
personnaly, I can kill a dozen of flies without any bad feeling, but I can't do harm to a spider,
even when, it's well known, spiders are much more cruel than flies in their living.
I have no explanation for that ... :?: :)

isn't it obvious?... you and spiders are on the same team... against the flies.
and to kill teammates is not ethical

Besides, c'mon, flies?
provide one good reason for them to exist and I start feeling sorry for their assassinations.

does look like an excellent style to produce with TVpaint, like with the shapetool.

maggots are useful in eating gangrenous tissue while leaving healthy flesh.

Now mosquitos, fleas and ticks... they can all go!

Well, as long as this thread has come back to life, I'll mention that the director of "Your Friend The Rat" , Jim Capobianco , posted some production photos and making-of information on his blog :

I just saw it on the DVD, it is really really nice. They really deserve the Annie Award they just won this week end.
