■ Studio Ghibli executive imaging director

■ DigitalVideo Italy managing director /Toonz main programmer Claudio Mattei

The Toonz software I know could only colourize scanned images and composite them with BGs. Does the recent version have any drawing tools?

Fistly Ghibli do not required drawing tool for Toonz Ghibli Edition, because Miyazaki & Takahata disliked digital drawin direclty outline till they retired.
They used Toonz for digial XSheet, pencil test, scanning, cleanup and water color coloring (using node composit with max 7 coloring layers).

One more thing,
Digital Video will also continue to develop and market a Toonz Premium version (* renamed from Toonz Harlequin 7.2 ) at a competitive price for those companies willing to invest in the customization of Toonz for their projects.

Thanks ten_zero, your posts are always informative.

Things are getting very interesting in the 2D animation industry.

Krita will offer free animation with their natural drawing engine...
Blender is implementing 2D animation which is free...
Toonz will now offer a free, production proven suite used by Studio Ghibli and the Korean studios that make the Warner Bros shows, Avatar the Last Airbender and a vast number of anime from Japan, etc...
Celsys just released their production proven animation tools to Clip Studio Paint as a free update, otherwise still fairly affordable...
DigiCel FlipBook is about to release a major update that will support Photoshop brushes...
ToonBoom are targeting the Japan market once more, now Pokemon is produced with it...
Adobe to re-release Flash as an animator centrist package...

It's exciting to say the least... One big gripe people usually have is 2D animation suites are overpriced compared to stop motion or CGI tools used by Pixar and Laika, so now hopefully there is no more excuses to resort to cheap Flash animation and people can start re-learning 2D animation again. I'll be sure to pick this up, Toonz is pretty powerful and if it's anything like I used in the past or read from the Studio Ghibli design books it could easily become my new daily driver and replace my current setup.

I wonder if Celsys will eventually localize PaintMan in English, since Toonz and Clip Studio Paint are cross compatible.

I'm definitely not going to abandon TVP for anything else - nobody with a good knowledge of a software will do that. But I'm afraid I'll have to learn at least some basics in all these programs because I can see future students of mine already using them.

It's pity that Celsys closed to develop RETAS STUDIO yet.
One of digital Anime drawing technology forum in December 2015 (Kyoto), Mr. Nozaki who is Celsys CEO said "We must unite Time-sheet (X-sheet) & PAINTMAN to CSP".

Exactly.
In Asia and Oceanic Animation industry, there are too many "the Black Ships : digital animation software without SmithMicro Anime Studio" jumped into "the market golden goal -low price or high creativity-" in a few months.
Spoiler : off the record :
My most favorite 2DCG software is Corel Painter family : they had bundled "Preston Blair's Advanced Animation" Japanese localized interactive learning edition.

Some people say "Corel Painter is WHAT ??? Are you STILL there !?". That's true, the animate function is gone :(

May this article become one of answer for Mr. Slowtiger's indicate.
CBcom_OT.jpg
The announcement of OpenToonz comes at a time when animation is experiencing the biggest boom period in its history. The widespread availability of hardware is allowing animation production to expand in parts of the world that traditionally have not been major animation producers (South and Central America, Africa, the Middle East).

However, many of the young artists in these regions do not have the resources to invest in proprietary software. That’s especially why we view OpenToonz, a free professional-grade 2D animation software, as a complete and total gamechanger for the animation industry moving forward. The animation floodgates just opened.

Toonz was first released in 1993 and has gone on to become a powerful tool for 2D animation. Besides Studio Ghibli's more recent works -- first used on 1999's Princess Mononoke -- it's also been used to produce the likes of Futurama, Asterix, and even video games such as Discworld 2.
Hmm, in use Astérix ... Is this (2015) ? (Ask Google)

I can confirm that Toonz was used in the production of "Asterix in Amerika". But this was a hybrid production: most of the film was still done with cels under the camera, they even built a new multiplane camera for it (must have been one of the the last of its kind).

The sea storm was not done "completely in Toonz", in fact the waves and ships were done in Softimage, then the wireframes were printed on A3 paper, and the characters were animated on top of that. Ripples on the surface of the ocean were an animated texture on paper, and the sky was done on paper as well. (I was responsible for scanning these parts and match colours as close as possible.) The CGI elements were rendererd, using the new "Mental Ray" shader which gave the ships a black outline and flat colours. This was combined with the scanned in character animation from Toonz.

Asterix
Good question :
not the recent 3D Asterix film (I have seen their workflow during a fun conference, it's using Mari, Nuke, Maya, etc. see below), but an older Asterix film.
workflow 3D astérix.jpg
- - - -

In fact, ToonZ is not anymore used in Europe except a very few number of studios.
Back in 2009, when working with Illuminated Films in London for Michael Dudok de Wit next film (the one funded by Ghibli), we were in competition with ToonBoom and ToonZ (on that time Animo was killed already by ToonBoom) and finally TVPaint was selected.

Thank you for reply and minute information.
As you understand "Astérix" don't know in my region so its very helpful.

I can recall vividly how almost "Ghiblist" & Japan/over the sea media said the negative "Yamada, the disgrace of Ghibli using CG" ; the first product "Made with Toonz (all coloring 3-5 layers per a frame, FX, particle for Fireworks and multiplane composit)".
Yamada is my most favorite Ghibli film (next : Porco Rosso) and like to play the Blu-ray in German language overvoice.
Sadly it is not contain Français overvoice only subtitle ... "Poco Rosso" Japan edition including French overvoice (as Jean Reno), but there are not Italiano in despite of Italian :x
Today the critics praise by the irony of fate : Toonz, "the Ghibli choosed" software become free and Open Source ...
Anyway, the day coming on Tomorrow morning ( at midnight in France/Germany ). I will watch the keynote streaming and back to report .

I afraid of (made with)Mischief that is a handy useful and simply vector brush software for Mac mini : After buyout by the Foundry it seems into a looooong cold sleep or become part of MARI :(
/* off the topic*/
Now may I ask one more question about Astérix ?
I read French culture & casual Idiom from "Histoire naturelle (Natural history)" book and some Iconologie guide translated from Italian, French and Germany but there are no answer.

Why the get angry people always throught fish to co-star's face ???
I think that portrayal become one of the reason why Astérix the movie does not play on screen in my region (without "Mission Kleopatra" because for feat. Monica Bellucci): "an act of regard foodstuff and commodities".
