Import Multilayer PSD

Post by schwarzgrau »

I try to import a multilayer PSD file in TVP, it imports it, but only as a single layer. I merged the groups in Photoshop and removed the guidelines, to see if this could be the problem, but I still only get the whole PSD merged into one single layer in TVP. Do I miss something?

Well the PSD format belongs to Adobe, so they change its specification as they wish ...
So far, a PSD that was exported by TVPaint would reopen with all its layers.

If you use the "save as" menu in Photoshop, can you change the format options ?

Check "maximize compatibility" when you save from PS and test itf the problem persists.

Unfortunately you don't get any options when you save a PSD from photoshop. Could you try to open a recent PSD file in TVPaint? Maybe I'm just doing something the wrong way.

Unfortunately it was already checken, I usually keep it checken, since I often need to import PSDs in other applications.

On my end I tested it with a recent PSD file (created in Adobe Photoshop 2021 , Release 22.3.1). The PSD file opens as expected in TVPaint 11.5.2, with all layers intact. (same as always,Groups folders are not preserved and not all blending modes are preserved because of how PS and TVP handle blending modes differently). I'm on Mac OS Mojave 10.14.6.

Thank you for testing David. Good to know it is possible, than I maybe need to try some things on my end to make it work.

Have you tried flattening each layer and its effects to be sure you have only layers with pixels and nothing more?

Yea, there are just plain layers. No groups, effects, guide layers or channels.

I don't have TVpaint now to test but I remeber it was a difference if you imported the PSD as an image or if you just opended it as a file. Have you tested to open it as a file?

I get the same results whether I open the PSD from the File menu > Open/Import or if I drag and drop the PSD onto the TVPaint interface. Both ways open the PSD as a new project with the layers intact , not merged to a single layer.

Would you mind sharing a sample file, to help us reproducing your issue ? I don't have Photoshop installed (and I'm on Linux). Thanks !

Indeed: in TVPaint one single layer; in GIMP many.

Then I saved from GIMP and reopened from TVPaint, and now it's okay (though the file lost half of its size) :
